The Croatian Grk wine can be found in Lumbarda, a town on the eastern end of the island Korčula, only six kilometers from Korčula town. This picturesque town surrounded by pine woods, olive groves and a small bay is home to large sandy vineyards. An ancient Greek colony settled in Lumbarda from the 4th and 3rd centuries BC establishing part of the beautiful Adriatic island of Korčula, they exchanged goods around Mediterranean colonies and brought Grk some of the grapes grown in Lumbarda.
While visiting Korcula a fantastic day trip option for wine tasting will be the town Lumbarda. Plavic Mali and the local famous Grk are the grape varieties which are gown in Lumbarda. The Grk has a history that dates to early Greek settlements and was the reason for our visit to Lumbarda. One of the Grk wines on Lumbarda, which was created by the Bire Winery won Decanter World Wine Awards for 2021 wines. Bire won Platinum which is the highest honor for Decanter. This little Croatian winery beat the Greek wineries for their Grk wine!
